In testing, T-Mobile's AI AutoPilot made network adjustments in about half the time

T-Mobile says recent testing showed AutoPilot, which adds intent-based AI automation to its self-organizing network, can make real-time network adjustments in about half the time. It is now rolling out nationwide.

Key figures

  • About half The time AutoPilot needed to make real-time network adjustments, in recent testing. (T-Mobile release, 23 Sep 2026)
  • 250,000+ Additional minutes sites stayed online during Winter Storm Fern, credited to the self-organizing network, not AutoPilot. (T-Mobile release, 23 Sep 2026)

Released by T-Mobile about its own network. Figures have not been independently verified. The storm figures come from the self-organizing network AutoPilot builds on, and restoration figures in the body include generator deployments.

When a winter storm knocks out power across a region, cell sites start living on batteries. Every minute a site stays up is a minute someone can call for help or check on family.

In a September 23, 2026 release from Bellevue, Washington, T-Mobile described what its Self-Organizing Network did during Winter Storm Fern in January. It kept "sites online for more than 250,000 additional minutes," or more than 4,100 hours in total, across more than 30 states, and made "more than 30,000 antenna adjustments during the storm to extend coverage and mitigate customer impacts." Together with generators, those efforts "helped restore coverage to 68% of customers who lost coverage within one hour and 98% within eight hours."

The newer piece is AutoPilot, which T-Mobile says "adds intent-based AI automation" to that network. If a site goes down, it works out how nearby sites should adjust to cover the gap while engineers fix the cause. "Recent testing showed AutoPilot can make real-time network adjustments in about half the time." T-Mobile is now rolling it out nationwide.

How to read this: these are T-Mobile's own figures and have not been independently verified. The storm numbers come from the self-organizing network that AutoPilot builds on, and the restoration figures include generator deployments, so not all of it is AI. The AI-specific figure, adjustments in about half the time, comes from testing rather than a live event.

No cost line here. Just coverage that held a little longer on the worst night of the winter.
